Khe Sanh Combat Base
 
The Guns of the First Battalion, Thirteenth Marines -1/13 ( Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Whiskey and the First Provisional 155 batteries ) fired 158,891 rounds in support of the Glorious Grunts of the 26th. Marines. It usually took 40 seconds or less to deliver rounds on target from the first radio call of the F/Os. 1/13 also was proud to support the brave Grunts of 2/1, 2/3, 3/3, 1/9, 2/9, 3rd. Recon, 5th. Recon and the 37th. ARVN.  The real fight at Khe Sanh was in the Hills where the Glorious Grunts took 881N, 881S, 471, 689, 861, 558, 861A, 950 and killed the NVA in A Shau valley, Rao Quan valley, The Rock Pile and Ca Lu. Later throughout I Corps, 1/13 would also fire support 24 hours a day,  ( we were the local power & light company ) for the Grunts of 4th. Marines, 5th. Marines and 7th. Marines from places like Hill 55, Hill 10, Happy Valley, Barrier Island and others nobody would ever hear of nor care about again. The Cannon Cockers and Gun Grunts fired rounds of Illumination, Willie Peter, HE in Rings of Steel, Time on Target, Arc Lights, H & I and when necessary- VT On Me!

The USS New Jersey was too late for Khe Sanh, but blew-up a lot of  I Corps with 2000 lb. rounds!!

Stateside duty at Marine Barracks, Washington, D.C. at 8Th. & I streets of burial ceremonies
at Arlington National Cemetery, ceremonial duty at the White House, Flag level retirement ceremonies and Tuesday and Friday parades was a far far cry from monsoons, incoming
mortors & rockets and bullets whizzing by !!

In Memory of my Brother Kit ( Christopher  - a huey door Gunner with the U.S. Army shot down three times and awarded Air Medals, the Bronze Star and more; I miss him each day), to Tater, to Charlie, to The Few, The Proud, The Marines and all those at the Last Firebase.
